Official Guide to Passport & ID Photo Requirements in Pakistan
Obtaining official identity documents like a Pakistani Machine Readable Passport (MRP) or a NADRA Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) is an essential milestone. However, one of the most frequent hurdles applicants face is providing an acceptable passport-sized photograph. Official portals and consulates enforce strict criteria regarding dimensions, background colors, framing, and lighting. If your photo fails to comply with even one of these criteria, your application can be delayed or rejected entirely.
Pakistani Passport Photo Requirements (35x45mm)
For a Pakistani Machine Readable Passport, the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGIP) specifies the following photo criteria:
- Dimensions: The photo must be exactly 35mm wide by 45mm high. At 300 DPI, this corresponds to 413 pixels wide by 531 pixels high.
- Background Color: The background must be a solid, uniform light blue. White or patterned backgrounds are strictly rejected for passport applications.
- Recency: The photo must be taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance.
- Head Size & Framing: The head must occupy between 70% and 80% of the vertical height of the photo (roughly 31mm to 36mm from chin to the top of the hair).
- Expression & Gaze: You must face the camera directly with a neutral expression. Mouth closed, no smiling, and no frowning.
- Accessories: Eyeglasses are highly discouraged due to reflection risk and frame glare. Tinted lenses are prohibited. Head coverings are only permitted for religious reasons, provided they do not obscure any facial features from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead.
NADRA Smart CNIC Photo Requirements
While the physical size of the photo remains identical to the passport photo (35x45mm), NADRA (National Database and Registration Authority) enforces a different background standard:
- Background Color: The photo must have a plain, solid white background. Do not upload photos with blue backgrounds for NADRA smart cards, as they will be rejected.
- Lighting: Perfect white backgrounds require soft frontal lighting to prevent shadows from falling behind your ears or neck.
- Contrast: There should be a clear distinction between the subject and the background. Avoid wearing white shirts when taking photos for NADRA to prevent blending into the background.
International Visa Photos (US Visa 2x2 Inches)
If you are applying for international visas (such as a US Visa, UK Visa, or Schengen Visa), the guidelines change significantly:
- US Visa: The required size is 2x2 inches (51x51mm), which translates to 600x600 pixels at 300 DPI. The background must be white, and glasses are strictly prohibited.
- Schengen Visa: The required size is 35x45mm, with a light gray or off-white background. The face must cover 70-80% of the frame.
How to Take a Compliant Photo at Home
With modern smartphone cameras, you can easily take a compliant photo at home without going to a professional studio. Follow these professional photography tips:
- Find the Right Background: Stand in front of a plain wall. If your wall is not white or blue, do not worry; our tool lets you overlay a digital background color. Just make sure the wall is a solid color and well-lit.
- Leverage Natural Light: Face a window during the daytime. Natural daylight provides soft, even lighting across your entire face, reducing shadows under the eyes and nose. Avoid using direct camera flash, which causes harsh highlights and red-eye.
- Keep the Camera at Eye Level: Ask a friend to hold the camera or use a tripod. The camera must be at the same level as your eyes, approximately 4 to 6 feet away. Avoid wide-angle lenses close up, as they distort facial proportions.
- Maintain a Neutral Stance: Keep your shoulders square, look directly into the camera lens, keep your eyes open, and maintain a closed-mouth neutral expression. Ensure your hair does not block your eyes or ears.
Using the Online Resizer Tool
Once you have captured the photo, drag and drop it into the DigitalTools.pk Passport Photo Resizer above. Choose the preset that matches your application type, choose the required background color, and then zoom and rotate the image until your chin and head alignment matches the overlay guideline lines. Once aligned, download the high-resolution JPEG to print or upload immediately.
