How this calculator works
This browser-based tool helps you make a first, transparent estimate from the values you provide. Enter the figures in the fields and the result updates as you edit them. JavaScript performs the calculation on your device; the calculator does not send your salary, property, vehicle or account details to a calculation server. Keep supporting documents secure and only enter sensitive figures on a device you trust.
Formula, assumptions and limits
Add or remove German VAT at the standard or reduced rate. German VAT is governed by the Umsatzsteuergesetz; section 12 UStG sets the standard and reduced rates.
Do not rely on a rounded estimate for a tax return, payment or legal decision. Compare it with official notices, current rate tables and professional advice where needed. Real-world outcomes may include additional reliefs, fees, rate changes or personal circumstances that a simple calculator cannot represent. Your entries are not saved and are discarded when you close the tab.
Use the output as a planning aid: verify each input, read the assumptions and adjust the figures when your circumstances differ. If an important detail is uncertain, contact the relevant authority or a qualified tax, legal or financial professional.
Before acting, check your inputs, tax year and jurisdiction. Note the assumptions used, compare the result with records and official guidance, and recalculate when rules or your circumstances change.
Separate the net amount, VAT and gross price
To add VAT, multiply the net amount by the selected rate and add the tax to the original amount. To extract VAT from a VAT-inclusive price, divide the gross amount by one plus the rate. Simply taking 19 per cent of a gross price does not give the VAT contained in it. The calculator offers Germany’s standard 19 per cent rate and reduced 7 per cent rate. Before using either, confirm that the particular supply qualifies and whether the amount you entered already includes VAT.
Section 12 of the German VAT Act sets the rates, but classification can depend on the product, bundled services, place of supply and special rules. This tool does not decide exemptions, intra-EU supplies, small-business treatment, reverse charge or advance payments. A mixed supply may need to be split into separate items. Businesses should also distinguish output VAT charged to customers from input tax they may be able to deduct; deduction depends on a valid invoice and other statutory conditions. Use the result for a simple price check or to understand the arithmetic. For cross-border transactions, multiple invoice lines, credit notes or unusual products, consult current tax guidance or an adviser.
