How this calculator works

This browser-based tool helps you make a first, transparent estimate from the values you provide. Enter the figures in the fields and the result updates as you edit them. JavaScript performs the calculation on your device; the calculator does not send your salary, property, vehicle or account details to a calculation server. Keep supporting documents secure and only enter sensitive figures on a device you trust.

Formula, assumptions and limits

Add or extract UK VAT at standard, reduced or zero rates. Rates and eligibility can depend on tax year, residence, transaction details and individual circumstances. UK income tax, National Insurance and SDLT follow separate rules; SDLT applies in England and Northern Ireland, while Wales and Scotland have different property-tax systems. Check current official guidance before acting.

Do not rely on a rounded estimate for a tax return, payment or legal decision. Compare it with official notices, current rate tables and professional advice where needed. Real-world outcomes may include additional reliefs, fees, rate changes or personal circumstances that a simple calculator cannot represent. Your entries are not saved and are discarded when you close the tab.

Use the output as a planning aid: verify each input, read the assumptions and adjust the figures when your circumstances differ. If an important detail is uncertain, contact the relevant authority or a qualified tax, legal or financial professional.

Before acting, check your inputs, tax year and jurisdiction. Note the assumptions used, compare the result with records and official guidance, and recalculate when rules or your circumstances change.

Adding VAT or extracting it from a price

Choose whether the amount is net or VAT-inclusive, select the applicable rate and enter the amount. To add VAT, the calculator multiplies the net figure by the rate and adds the result. To extract VAT from a gross amount, it divides by one plus the rate; this correctly isolates the VAT portion of a VAT-inclusive price. The tool offers 20 per cent standard, 5 per cent reduced and zero-rate choices. A zero-rated supply remains taxable at zero per cent and is not automatically the same as an exempt supply. The result is useful for a straightforward single-rate calculation or checking a quote.

UK VAT liability depends on what is supplied, where it is supplied and the customer or transaction circumstances. Some goods and services are exempt, outside the scope or subject to special schemes; a business may also use the cash accounting, flat-rate or margin scheme. Mixed-rate invoices need separate calculations for each line, and rounding methods can affect pennies. This calculator does not decide whether a supplier must register, whether input tax is recoverable or which rate legally applies. Confirm classification with current HMRC guidance and retain a valid VAT invoice for business records. For cross-border sales, digital services, imports or exports, check place-of-supply rules before relying on a simple rate selector.
